Shortcakes is our once-a-week guide to the latest in animated short films. We scour the Internet, from YouTube to Vimeo to parts unknown.
We’re kicking the New Year off right with some great picks for you! Planemah is downright awesome. The others are, too!

Creator: Jakob Schmidt
They say: In a dark world of greed a king is chasing the secrets of universe and existence. Planemah is a trippy allegory about desire, ruthlessnes and the complete loss of control.
For more informations about the film and festival screenings visit the production blog planemah.blogspot.com.
We say: It’s pretty effin’ metal. Like, more than Dethklok. Planemah tells more of a story in five minutes than many films manage in 90.
TAKE MY HAND
Creator: Hannah Rough
They say: TAKE MY HAND is an animated film about the memories left behind after experiencing loss. It encapsulates the bond I had with my grandfather and how he alongside my grandmother shaped who I am today. Through the use of VHS effects and childlike illustrations TAKE MY HAND is an animated conversation. The film was inspired by the Celebration of Life held after my grandfather’s passing in 2011.
We say: Really beautiful, even if the art style is a little reminiscent of Dr. Katz.
So Late So Soon
Creator: Jake Dudas
They say: My first short stop motion animated film about Alzheimer’s/Dementia and its affect on a relationship.
(All sound effects if not credited or created by me are from my university’s sound effects library and used through their licences)
We say: Yes, another bummer. I’m impressed with the skill of the stop motion animation, as well as the artful use of materials. Creating the “memories” out of newspaper and book pages strikes a real chord.
Sonámbulo / The Sleepwalker
Creator: Theodore ushev
They say: “Sonámbulo / The Sleepwalker” is this week’s Vimeo Staff Pick Premiere. Read a Q&A with director Theodore Ushev here: vimeo.com/blog/post/staff-pick-premiere-the-sleepwalker
A surrealist journey through colours and shapes inspired by the poem Romance Sonámbulo by Federico García Lorca. Visual poetry in the rhythm of fantastic dreams and passionate nights
We say: Well, Vimeo kind of said it all. It’s a gorgeous free jazz nightmare.
The Last SelFie (Promo)
Creator: Performance Gallery Films, LLC
(Update: They removed the film! Huh?)
They say: The Last SelFie 📸 A short film series by Performance Gallery Flms, LLC, in conjunction with original music by The Lake Drain Lounge 💽 from the soundtrack for The Lake Drain2📛.
We say: This a (quite appealing!) promotional video for an upcoming short film series. Sadly, most of the films themselves are not animated. Nonetheless, they are viewable here.
