The massive success of The Lego Movie has given the toy manufacturer a new lease on life in the animated world. It seems that Warner Bros. and Lego greenlit a number of spinoffs and sequels as soon as it became clear they had a hit on their hands.
The Lego Batman Movie came out this week, and alongside it is a trailer for The Lego Ninjago Movie. Ninjago is just one of many, many settings that Lego toy enthusiasts have explored for years. This one centers on the lore of kung-fu and wuxia films.
The trailer looks great, with plenty of references to the entire oeuvre of kung fu movies. Modern tales like Jackie Chan’s cop movies are represented, as are more traditionally mythical stories along the lines of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and War of the Archers.
Most of all, though, this looks like a good old fashioned Japanese mecha movie. Everything seems to be set amongst giant robots duking it out.
Like The Lego Batman Movie, celebrity casting is the order of the day. Voices set to appear in the film include Justin Theroux, Fred Armisen, Olivia Munn, Jackie Chan, and Michael Pena. Comedians Kumail Nanjiani (Silicon Valley) and Zach Woods (The Office, and also Silicon Valley) are also among the voice cast.
The Lego Ninjago Movie will release in the United States on September 22nd. Check out the trailer right here!
