BioWare is slowly revealing the voice acting cast for Mass Effect Andromeda. You know, the upcoming sequel/reboot of the best sci-fi RPG series ever*. One of the coolest surprises is the inclusion of Kumail Nanjiani.
Kumail, a native of Pakistan, started his career in stand-up comedy, and quickly made a name for himself with his unassuming and unabashed embrace of all things geek. He’s appeared on many podcasts over the years, and hosted his own videogame show called The Indoor Kids. He also had a bit of a feud with podcasting giant Marc Maron.
The comic made it to the small screen in 2014 with a starring role on Silicon Valley as scheming coder Dinesh. That led to the movies, and he’s since landed parts in Fist Fight, Central Intelligence Agency, and a starring voice role in The LEGO Ninjago Movie.
Throughout all of that, Kumail never stopped letting his geek flag fly. He loves video games, comic books, and other nerdery, and he’s more than happy to talk about it in interviews and podcasts.
Basically, Kumail’s a big ol’ dork. He’s one of us, and he made it big on his nerdiness.
That’s why it’s such a kick to see BioWare’s announcement that Kumail will play a role in Mass Effect Andromeda. The video BioWare put out doesn’t name the character, only describing him as a “Space Frog”.
The character is apparently “very important to the Initiative”, “but nobody respects him.” Kumail goes on to slather more faint praise on the frog, saying he means well, but is a little in over his head and maybe likes power a little too much.
Sounds like a relative of Mordin Solus to me. The Salarian scientist from the previous two Mass Effect games, while always supremely competent, was certainly power-crazed at times.
Kumail’s perfect for the fast-talking patter of the Salarians, so it’s a pretty good bet that’s what he’s playing. Let’s just hope he can sing.
Mass Effect Andromeda will release on March 21, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
