Did you see Trolls? I must admit I did not. Apparently enough people saw it to warrant a sequel, though, because, we’re getting one in a few years.
DreamWorks confirmed Trolls 2 is in production and already has a release date of April 10, 2020. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake are set to return in starring roles.
Anna Kendrick is one of those actresses who is also a fantastic musician. She first showed that side of her talents in 2012’s Pitch Perfect, where she stole the show with her singing chops. Kendrick is also no stranger to voice acting, having appeared in Family Guy and ParaNorman before taking the role in Trolls.
Justin Timberlake is, of course, Justin Timberlake. Aside from multiple Grammy Awards, he’s won voice roles on The Cleveland Show, Yogi Bear (as Boo Boo!), and Shrek the Third.
By all accounts, the first Trolls film was a perfectly serviceable Sing-esque series of cartoon characters covering pop songs. It did fairly well at the box office, opening at #2 and grossing $46,581,172 according to Box Office Mojo.
The decision to base a major animated feature on a discontinued line of Danish toys was a bit of a gamble, but one that paid off. Although Troll Dolls hadn’t been flying off store shelves in many years, everyone knew what the crazy-haired imps were. And in entertainment, brand awareness is everything. Inspiring a crowd of people to wonder “Why would they make a movie out of those?” is more than enough to get a few people to see the film out of sheer curiosity. From there, DreamWorks banked on the quality of the film and the appeal of its voice actors to spread the word, and it seemed to have works.
As of March 1, it had made back more than double its production cost. Although it didn’t exactly set the world on fire, it’s more than enough to justify a second trip down toy commercial lane.
There could be worse things to happen in the middle of the next presidential election.
Trolls 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on April 10, 2020. Watch for more coverage in, well, two and a half years.
