If you’re of a certain age, you’ve surely read a few Captain Underpants books. Supercool kiddos George and Harold, their jerk of a principal Mr. Krupp, and their best friend/liability Captain Underpants.
In case the books are news to you, here’s the plot: George and Harold are in the fourth grade and are always getting into trouble for their elaborate pranks. In the first book (there are 9), they take a joke too far when they hypnotize Principal Krupp into believing he’s a superhero clad in tighty whities and not much else.
Most of the stories revolve around the kids trying to keep the Captain safe while he runs around fighting crime. That includes foiling the schemes of his nemesis Professor Poopypants, who is a real supervillain armed with super-powered gadgets.
Captain Underpants doesn’t actually have any powers, so it turns into play on Baby’s Day Out or Tot Watchers. With lots of toilet jokes.
Unsurprisingly, a major cartoon studio picked up the film rights to the franchise way back in 2011. DreamWorks outsourced Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie to Mikros Images, a studio based in Montreal, Canada.
First Epic Trailer for Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
The first trailer is out, and it looks as solid as anything DreamWorks puts out. Captain Underpants is directed by Turbo’s David Soren, from a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller (Storks).
DreamWorks put together a killer voice cast for this thing, opting to go with experienced voice actors and improv comedians instead of kids. I think it was a wise choice, and the characters all sound great.
- Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley) as Harold
- Kevin Hart (Ride Along, The Secret Life of Pets) as George
- Ed Helms (The Office) as Principal Krupp / Captain Underpants
- Nick Kroll (Kroll Show) as Professor Poopypants
- Jordan Peele (Key & Peele) as Melvin
- Kristen Schaal (Bob’s Burgers, Gravity Falls, Last Man on Earth) as Edith
That’s a pretty strong representation from Comedy Bang! Bang! alums.
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is scheduled for release on June 2, 2017.
