Gadzooks! 11 of the Best Steampunk Games

Steampunk ComputerSteampunk is just plain cool. Can we agree on that? Monocles! Crazy robot arms! Giant mechanical spiders?

Despite that, steampunk is an underrepresented genre in video games and cartoons. There are some great works out there to be sure, but they’re few and far between.

So with that in mind, here’s a list of 11 of the best steampunk games. They’re for PC, Xbox, Playstation, and even phones. The only requirement is that they have plenty of gears. Enjoy!

Thief

Thief Garrett

Where to get it: Steam carries the Thief Collection, your best bet to get the three good games in the series.

The Thief franchise has been going strong since 1998. There are four games in the series, each chronicling the exploits of master sneaky-fellow Garrett.

Most people agree that the first two games, Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age are the best. The third game, Thief: Deadly Shadows was a sharp dip in quality.

The steampunk elements of these games are prevalent throughout the setting and in the character of Garrett himself. Garrett lives in a place simply called “The City”, which is undergoing an industrial revolution. It’s the very beginning of a steampunk setting.

Characters are often distrustful of technology, and there’s a hefty dose of religion and magic still kicking around. At the same time, clockwork robots guard many of the areas you’ll burgle.

Garrett himself acquires an expanding array of steampunk gadgets as the games go on, starting with a bionic eye he acquires after magical creature plucks out one of his own.

The games were pioneers in the stealth genre, and developed many of the concepts that we today take for granted in Splinter Cell, Dishonored, and others. Vision cones, a shadow meter, and the use of thrown objects to distract guards all originated in the Thief series.

Newcomers to the series may want to start with the latest entry, 2014’s Thief. It supports modern controllers, modern graphics, and makes some nods to today’s gameplay tastes. If it grabs you, then the first two games are a great trip down memory lane.

Particularly using some of the many great mods available. At a minimum, everyone should install the Thief Gold HD Texture Mod.
