The new DuckTales reboot keeps looking better and better. The art is beautiful, the trailer sizzled, and they just revealed an exciting addition to the voice acting cast: Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Yes, he’s doing another Disney project.
The man behind Hamilton has become something of a Disney wunderkind. Since working on the original songs for Moana, he’s taken on all sorts of projects at the House of Mouse. He has a major role in the upcoming Mary Poppins sequel, and is the lead composer for the live-action The Little Mermaid.
Miranda joins an already-amazing crew that includes David Tennant, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, Kate Micucci, and Bobby Moynihan. Disney is pulling out all the stops for this show, and it looks like it’s turning out great.
Lin-Manuel Miranda has been a real boon to geekdom since he came on the scene. He has the kind of genuine, unashamed enthusiasm for things like fantasy and cartoons that just makes this stuff fun. Did you know he also wrote the cantina song in Star Wars: The Force Awakens?
Anyway, he will voice Gizmoduck, a fan-favorite character. Gizmo’s appearance wasn’t a sure thing, and plenty of fans are happy to have it confirmed with this announcement. Gizmo’s the closest thing in DuckTales to a superhero, and he featured in some of the original series’ most memorable episodes.
Gizmoduck guards Scrooge’s vault, and sometimes tags along for the McDuck family adventures. He’s a takeoff on Robocop, wearing a similar helmet and sharing a similar backstory. Although without quite so much blood. Kid stuff.
By day, Gizmo goes by Fenton Crackshell, Scrooge’s accountant. He’s also one of the few ducks to make a crossover to Darkwing Duck, Disney’s lesser-known spin on Batman. You know, the one with the amazing theme song.
The funniest thing about all this? In the original DuckTales, Gizmoduck’s voice actor was a singer-songwriter named… Hamilton Camp.
